Rogers of the GazetteRogers of the Gazette follows the adventures and misadventures of the editor of the Ilyria Weekly Gazette. The show aired on CBS in 1953-54 and starred Will Rogers, Jr., nee William Vann Rogers, son of the famous cowboy-humorist, Will Rogers. Rogers, Jr., always considered publishing to be his primary career. He served as publisher of the Beverly Hills Citizen from 1935 until 1953. He also served in the Army during the latter years of World War II under General George Patton, receiving a Bronze Star. During the 1950s and 1960s, he dabbled in movies and television and was active in Democratic politics. Many have compared the fictional Ilyria to the equally fictional Mayberry from television's Andy Griffith Show. Like Griffith's Sheriff Taylor, Rogers is the single parent of a small child, a daughter, Jill. The plots of Rogers of the Gazette, like those of Griffith's show, tend toward gentle, human interest stories revolving around characters such as aggrieved readers, cantankerous local politicos, and feisty children.
