The Pacific StoryThe Pacific Story was an NBC documentary that focused on the nations of the Pacific rim, their history and their potential roles in a post-World War II world. Opening with a statement that, as the war progressed, "events in the Pacific are taking on ever-greater importance," each episode explored the history and culture of one country; a number of countries received multiple episodes. The half-hour episodes aired from July 1943 to January 1947. Persons involved in the production included such notables as Pearl Buck, Henry Luce, and Owen Lattimore. Lattimore, sadly, was among the many innocent scholars and public figures who fell afoul of the scurrilous Senator Joe McCarthy during the Red Scare of the early 1950s.
