Maxwell House Good NewsThe Maxwell House Good News program was an hour-long variety show sponsored by Maxwell House Coffee and produced by MGM studios. It featured a variety of MGM personalities in musical numbers, interviews, and skits. Many of the skits, not surprisingly, highlighted just-released or soon-to-be-released MGM movies. The show premiered in late 1937 as Good News of 1937 and ran into 1940; each year, the name was updated to reflect the current year. The show had several hosts over the years, all MGM stars, such as Jimmy Stewart, Robert Taylor, and Dick Powell; Rosalind Russell, Virginia Bruce, Lionel Barrymore, and similar luminaries appeared as guests. The band leader was Meredith Wilson. Other regulars included Fanny Brice and Frank Morgan in comic roles. I have quite enjoyed listening to this. In particular, in episode 16, there is a delightful moment when Fanny Brice and Jack Benny crack each other up. For more information, see Wikipedia. Series description provided by Frank Bell. |
