John Steele, Adventurer

John Steele, Adventurer is a rock 'em, sock 'em adventure show. Each half-hour episode features an escapade "from the files of John Steele." The show's name is misleading, as Steele does not figure in the adventures. He introduces them and occasionally makes comments as they unfold, but the adventures themselves involve a friend or acquaintance from his travels. (A number of the articles I've seen on the internet about this program seemed to have missed this distinction).

The show was broadcast in 1949 and a number of the episodes feature veterans of World War II scarred by the war or seeking excitement. Many persons find the stories reminiscent of adventure magazines such as the now-defunct Argosy. As an aside, when I was growing up, most of the adult men around me were WWII veterans; I can attest that the last thing they wanted was more adventure.

John Steele, Adventurer by no means represents the best of old time radio, but the shows can be a fun listen.
