Dr. Christian

Dr. Christian tells the stories of Dr, Paul Christian in the fictional town of River's End somewhere in the American Midwest. River's End is much like where I grew up; folks are born and live their lives in the same neighborhoods, perhaps in the same houses, seldom leaving except perhaps for college or the military. They are surrounded by friends (and maybe a few not-friends) and family and see the same family doctor for any treatment short of surgery.

Because he doesn't just treat his patients, he knows then, Dr. Christian ends up helping them deal with personal issues, family crises, and even occasional crimes. His gentleness, wisdom, knowledge, and experience invariably bring the crisis of the week to a satisfactory resolution.

The show ran on radio from 1937 to 1954, then continued on television until 1956. In addition, a half-dozen movies featuring the doctor were released from 1939 through 1941. The Danish actorJean Hersholt, who first played a doctor in a film about the Dionne Quintuplets, portrayed Dr. Christian. It's thought that he named his character in honor of Hans Christian Andersen. Over the years, a series of actresses played his nurse, Judy Price.
