Challenge of the Yukon

Challenge of the Yukon (later renamed Sergeant Preston of the Yukon in 1950) began as a 15-minute serial following the adventures of Sergeant Preston of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and his lead huskie, Yukon King, during the Yukon Gold Rush of the late 1890s. The show later morphed into half-hour stand-alone episodes.

Preston and King are caught up in adventures with gold prospectors, settlers, smugglers, fur traders, and native Americans. Throughout, Sergeant Preston protects the weak, aids the virtuous, and combats the bad guys. Plots varied. In some shows, Preston and King might be pursuing bad guys; in others, they might be helping an injured trapper or a family threatened by wild animals.

The show aired on radio from 1938 to 1955, when it moved to television as a half-hour adventure show. As with many long-running radio shows, a number of actors over the years voiced the recurring roles. I never heard the radio show, but my brother and I were big--er, little--fans of the TV show.
