Captains of IndustryCaptains of Industry was conceived in 1937 to dramatize the lives of "self-made" men and, in the process, to offer a glimmer of hope to persons still suffering under the after-effects of the Crash of 1929. Subjects included persons such as Andrew Carnegie, Jay Gould, and Milton Hershey. The profiles were nothing if not adulatory. Any weakness or missteps (and in some cases crimes, fraud, and brutality--think "Homestead Strike") of the subjects were, if not absent, thoroughly white-washed. The show was created by the Atlas Radio Corporation of Canada, a radio manufacturer, and syndicated throughout North America. For more information, see the Old Time Radio Catalog.
