Bright Star

Bright Star, officially The Irene Dunn and Fred MacMurray Show, was a half-hour sitcom set in the offices of The Morning Star, a newspaper in a middle-sized town somewhere in America. Irene Dunn voiced Susan, the owner and editor of the paper, and Fred MacMurray voiced George, a headstrong and impetuous reporter. Potential news scoops serve as the springboard for many of the plots. An unspoken romantic attraction between the two adds a bit of spice to the stories. I found the scripts rather run-of-the-mill examples of its genre, but worth listening to for the skill of the performers and its humor.

Fred MacMurray was a prolific actor with nearly 100 roles in film and television over a career that spanned four decades; he is likely best remembered today as the dad in the television show, My Three Sons, which ran for over a decade. Irene Dunne was a major movie star in the 1930s and 1940s, earning the nickname, "First Lady of Hollywood." She was nominated for the Oscar for Best Actress five times, but never won. By the 1950s, she started to wind down her film career and appeared primarily on radio and television in the 1950s and early 1960s.

The show aired in the 1952-53 season. For more information, see OTRCAT.
