BlondieBlondie is a half-hour situation comedy based on the long-running comic strip of the same name. The radio show followed a successful movie starring Penny Singleton and Arthur Lake, who recreated their movie roles for the broadcast. Blondie follows the day-to-day adventures and misadventures of the Bumstead family: The sometimes flighty and ambitious-for-her-husband Blondie; her husband, the hapless and bungling Dagwood; and their children, neighbors, and associates. The radio show ran on various networks from 1939 to 1950 (Singleton left the show about half-way through its run and in the remaining years several actresses voiced Blondie, including Arthur Lake's actual wife, Patricia Lake). Meanwhile the Blondie movies became what today would be called a "franchise" of 28 films. The comic strip is still in production, now drawn by Chic Young's son, Dean (several other artists maintained the strip between Chic Young's passing and Dean Young's assuming it). It has managed to keep up with the decades, changing with the times. For example, Blondie, in addition to taking care of her family, but now runs a catering business, and, in a recent strip, the children--teenagers for the last several decades--were off to the mall with friends "to stare at our phones."
