Bulldog Drummond

Bulldog Drummond (aka Captain Hugh Drummond) was a British veteran of World War I who, dissatisfied with a peaceful life after being demobilized, takes up the life of an adventurer, solving crimes and defending the weak. His nickname, Bulldog, refers to his tenacity, strength, and courage. Independently wealthy, Drummond is in it for the adventure, not for the money.

The show originated at WOR in New York and was distributed through the Mutual Broadcasting System from 1941 through 1954. (In the Mutual series, Drummond retains his English accent, but is transplanted to the U. S. and assisted by his sidekick, Denny.) Drummond is typical of certain genre of fictional adventurer popular in the UK (and the US), including Sexton Blake and the Saint.

The character was based on the lead character of series of novels by H. C. McNeile under the pen name "Sapper" ("sapper" is British slang for "combat engineer"); after McNeile's death, his friend Gerard Fairlie continued the series. In addition to the radio show, the novels led to a play, movies, and graphic novels.
