| I may have a somewhat dubious distinction in that I met and cared for an OTR personality. His name was Bob Hite l. I was working as a Nurse Anesthetist in Tampa, Fl and monitored Mr Hite for a cataract operation. I was unaware of his work in radio and TV but did know he was the father of one of our TV news anchors in Tampa (Bob Hite ll) In the recovery area I asked him what he had done prior to retirement. He said he had been in radio. He had started in the 30's at station WXYZ in Detroit. He told me he had narrated "The Lone Ranger" and when he said "From out of the past came the thundering hoof beats of the great horse Silver," I knew it was the voice I had heard many times as a child. He told me he did "The Lone Ranger" and Mike Wallace did "The Green Hornet" Wallace took a job acting in a daytime soap opera and Mr Hite did both progams for a while. Due to a heavy surgical schedule I was only able to talk to him for a short while but I enjoyed it. He died in 2000 at age 86 and I've often wondered why he wasn't mentioned more often in OTR history because he did a lot of radio and TV work. |
