| Mysterious Traveler was a transcribed syndicated program that was produced very cheaply and paid union scale to actors greatly for the job. It was distributed to independent stations, using the Mutual network, to fit into their program schedule. The program's authors Robert A. Arthur and David Kogan took some of the MT scripts, shortened them by 15 minutes and put them on their other program The Strange Dr Weird, which was sponsored by Adams Hats. Like its counterpart, the Whistler, the Mysterious Traveler ran for several years. However, because the program was distributed to independent stations, the recordings were not returned to the network. These recordings were usually stored in the station's library until they were thrown out to make more room. Network sponsored shows were usually better preserved and in some cases, the sponsor had recordings made of every show so that they could protect the copyright. That is why there is a complete run of the Inner Sanctum/Lipton Tea Broadcasts while those sponsored by Bromo Seltzer, the successor to Lipton Tea, are harder to find. Many of the Inner Sanctums of this period are the Armed Forces Network Shows that were broadcast to U.S. servicemen in Europe after WWII. If you go to Internet Archives Old Time Radio, you will see a complete listing of all radio shows still in existence. |
