I got the sad news from one of my students this afternoon that Leonard Nimoy has passed away. Although best known as Star Trek's Mr. Spock, Nimoy was also a radio personality as one of a revolving cast of hosts on Sears Radio Theatre (1979-1980). He was the third host, after Richard Widmark and Howard Duff, for the show's Friday night adventure themed shows. Other hosts for Sears Radio Theatre included Lorne Greene (Western Night on Mondays), Andy Griffith (comedy night on Tuesdays), Vincent Price (Mystery night on Wednesdays), and Cicely Tyson (Love & Hate night on Thursdays).

Nimoy also starred in a 1994 production of the classic War of the Worlds broadcast by L.A. Theatre Works. He took the role of Prof. Richard Pierson, which Orson Welles had played in the original. The cast included several other Star Trek alumni from various iterations of the franchise.

I think I heard him in the War Of The Worlds re-make. As I recall, he was pretty good.

Was that the one that had several NPR newspeople as themselves? I always thought they were brave to get involved.

Spock and McCoy are probably having one of their discussions of emotion vs logic with Mr. Scott acting as Referee. Hard to believe it's been 46 days already since his passing. Some people just stick in your mind as always being there even though you know they will one day pass just as anyone else will. Mr. Nimoy also did some voice work. He was the voice of Mr. Moundshroud in Ray Bradbury's tale of "The Halloween Tree." He was also in both the original and the remake of "I Robot" on The Outer Limits. In the original version he played a reporter, and in the re-make he played the part of the lawyer defending Adam Link (the robot) who was charged with murder. He had a cameo role in "Them" way back in the 50's as well when he was just starting out.
