The priest at my church's father was a radio and TV producer whose credits included "Fibber McGee". Occasionally Fr. Warren will pull out one of his dad's old scripts and recruit parishioners to help him perform it live as after dinner entertainment at church potlucks. Warren always plays Fibber and it's great fun all the way around.

Fibber McGee 1947-02-04 Baby Sitting With Teeny

"Dad-rat it, I just wanted a quiet evening at home. What's going on?"

"Nothing that any experienced radio listener couldn't work out, dearie!"

In spite of that riposte, there were a couple of moments in this show that play with the audience's expectations. The Jordans liked to do that now and again.

Firstly, the little girl from across the street Teeny drops in. Nothing unusual there, but she actually has a few lines of dialogue with Molly! Since the same person played both parts, it was customary for years that Molly would leave the room on some pretext just before Teeny arrived. Not this time though.

Secondly, Mayor La Trivia calls in. Invariably his conversations with Fibber end with him getting thoroughly confused and storming out. But this time round it's Fibber who gets befuddled and Gale Gordon's character who tries to straighten him out.

Nice to see that even after all those years they could still ring the changes and keep the audience off-balance.

#529 "The New Breadbox"

A typical Fibber & Molly plot -- Molly's new breadbox doesn't match the color scheme of the kitchen. She suggests exchanging the breadbox. Fibber's solution is to repaint the kitchen to match the breadbox!

The rest of the episode is taken up with Fibber's attempt to match the color (Spanked Baby Pink).... Laughing
